Towards a UK Aviation Skills Plan

Towards a UK Aviation Skills Plan

In February 2013, Simon Witts (founder & CEO of Aviation Skills Partnership) wrote a paper entitled ‘TOWARDS A UK AVIATION SKILLS PLAN’.

The plan, which outlines and discusses the deficit in aviation skills, was written for The Royal Aeronautical Society. The Royal Aeronautical Society was established in 1866 and has always been at the forefront of developments in aerospace. It seeks to promote the highest professional standards and provide a central forum for sharing knowledge.

The paper discusses the international impact of and response to the need for a new generation of aviation professionals. A lot of the evidence cited here forms the basis of ASP’s agenda and actions. We are now in the process of implementing our aviation skills plan, but the original vision that Simon laid out in this document is still relevant and poignant.

How To Become a Professional Pilot Steven Hadley

How To Become a Professional Pilot Steven Hadley

Steven Hadley is an ASP ambassador and, at just 21 years old, is a professional pilot flying for one of Europe’s largest airlines.

This book is his friendly and personal guide to getting into the aviation industry. It offers a first person account of the process, with useful and detailed information about the different processes that one must go through to become a pilot. It is a welcome relief from the formal documentation that you would otherwise have to trawl through to find out about the various tests and qualifications that a wannabe pilot must undertake.

Spitfire Evolution - Paul Beaver

Best-selling author of SPITFIRE PEOPLE, Paul Beaver is launching a new handbook for Spitfire enthusiasts called SPITFIRE EVOLUTION. The new book captures the various marks and variants of the world’s most iconic aeroplane.

SPITFIRE EVOLUTION has over 70 illustrations from award-winning artist Jon Freeman and a foreword by aeronautical engineer and eye-witness to the first flight, David Faddy. David’s father, Alf was the design team section leader at Supermarine for what was then called the Type 300 so his insight is almost unique.

Spitfire People - Paul Beaver

Published to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, this book presents a fresh angle on the Spitfire by examining the contribution to its development and achievements by over 65 people, some famous, others not.

Without the courage and tenacity of some leading political and military figures and the hard work of lesser-known mortals, there would have been no Spitfire, no Battle of Britain and no ultimate victory in 1945.

ASP at the Aviation Education Conference 2017

On the 25th March, ASP joined aviation organisations from across the nation at the 10th YES annual Aviation Education Conference at Brooklands Museum in Surrey. We also sponsored this year’s event, as we believe that opportunities to work together for the benefit of young people and the aviation industry are invaluable.

The focus for this year’s event was ‘How aviation can engage youth’. There were talks from a variety of organisations from many different sectors of aviation, each with their own angle on youth engagement. There were speakers from more recreational organisations such as The Joystick Club, through to the career-focused talk from the RAF recruiting team. The day even took a technological turn as Rob Barsby talked about the Air League Youth Aviation app and the way that social media can engage youth.

We’re proud to have been represented at the event by one of our excellent ambassadors: Ben Russell. Ben gave a talk on our Aircrew Career Pathways, while CEO Simon Witts gave an enlightening overview of our plans and activities.

Louie Trott, also in attendance, said “I believe that the continuing work from Aviation skills partnership, will help the younger generation to get into aviation. From the conference the main point I took away was that; in the face of adversity you should always pursue a hankering for aviation.'”
